    engineering means technological progress,
progress means higher productivity of labor,
higher productivity means higher salaries and faster growth.

No engineering means you plow your field with a horse, and you can plow one acre per day. Engineering gives you a tractor, so you can plow 10 acres in one day, so you can grow more stuff and enjoy a more comfortable life.
