Comparing "Apples and Apples"

If you are new to technology, being able to compare offers from vendors can be confusing. For example:
  • SWN advertised data speeds are MINIMUMS
  • Most advertised speeds are MAXIMUMS
  • SWN data rates are BYTES, many others are BITS

Example:

  • Home User ADSL is 128,000 BITS per second MAXIMUM
  • SWN is 64,000 BYTES per second MINIMUM
  • There are 8 bits in a byte, therefore standard SWN is 512,000 BITS per second (i.e. 64,000 bytes * 8), or a minimum of 4 times faster than Home User ADSL.
